Birdwatching in Yanacocha & Visit to Nono

Full-day excursion from Quito.

This day trip is perfect for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts looking to experience the peace and biodiversity just outside the city.

We depart from Quito early in the morning and drive towards the western slopes of the Andes. Our first destination is the Yanacocha Reserve, located at around 3,500 meters above sea level. This cloud forest reserve is renowned for its rich variety of hummingbirds and other high-altitude bird species, including endemic and rare ones such as the Black-breasted Puffleg, Sword-billed Hummingbird, and the colorful Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager.



Accompanied by a guide, we take a gentle walk along a well-maintained trail through the cloud forest, making regular stops to observe birds and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

After visiting Yanacocha, we continue to the charming village of Nono, one of the gateways to the protected Chocó bioregion. Here, we take a short walk through the village, and you’ll have the option to enjoy a local lunch (at your own expense) in one of the cozy restaurants.

In the afternoon, we return to Quito, hopefully with some memorable bird sightings and nature impressions to take home.

Deze excursie is perfect voor natuurliefhebbers en vogelaars die willen genieten van de rust en biodiversiteit net buiten de stad.

In de vroege ochtend verlaten we Quito en rijden we richting de westelijke flanken van de Andes. Ons eerste doel is het Yanacocha Reservaat, gelegen op zo’n 3.500 meter hoogte. Dit nevelwoudreservaat staat bekend om zijn grote diversiteit aan kolibries en andere hooglandvogels, waaronder endemische en zeldzame soorten zoals de Black-breasted Puffleg, de Sword-billed Hummingbird en de kleurrijke Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager.

Samen met een gids maken we een rustige wandeling over het goed onderhouden pad door het nevelwoud, waarbij we onderweg regelmatig stoppen om vogels te spotten en te genieten van het prachtige landschap.

Na het bezoek aan Yanacocha rijden we verder naar het charmante dorpje Nono, een van de toegangspoorten tot het beschermde Chocó-gebied. Hier maken we een korte wandeling door het dorp en kun je eventueel genieten van een lokale lunch (op eigen kosten) in een van de gezellige restaurantjes.

In de loop van de middag keren we terug naar Quito, met hopelijk mooie vogelwaarnemingen en natuurmomenten op zak.
