Day Trip to Antisana National Park – Hiking in the Shadow of the Volcano

Full-day excursion from Quito

This day trip takes you to one of Ecuador’s most impressive and lesser-visited natural areas: Antisana National Park. Located about two hours from Quito, the park offers spectacular landscapes of highland páramo, volcanic peaks, and crystal-clear lakes.

We depart from Quito in the morning and drive south toward the park. Along the way, we’ll enjoy scenic views and have a good chance of spotting wildlife such as condors, caracaras, and wild llamas (vicuñas).

Start La Mica Hike

One of the highlights of the day is the hike around Lake Mica, known as the Mica Loop. This is a peaceful walk of approximately 6.3 kilometers, following well-maintained trails around the lake, with breathtaking views of the towering Antisana Volcano (5,704 m) on clear days. The trail takes you through the unique páramo ecosystem, where you can observe rare plants and bird species.

After the hike, there will be time for a light lunch or snack (optional and at your own expense), before we make our way back to Quito. We return in the afternoon with fresh mountain air in our lungs and unforgettable nature moments in our minds.

Dagexcursie vanuit Quito

Deze dagtocht brengt je naar een van de meest indrukwekkende en minder bezochte natuurgebieden van Ecuador: Nationaal Park Antisana. Het park ligt op ongeveer twee uur rijden van Quito en biedt een spectaculair landschap van uitgestrekte páramo, vulkanische pieken en helderblauwe meren.

We vertrekken in de ochtend vanuit Quito en rijden in zuidelijke richting naar het park, onderweg genieten we van prachtige uitzichten en grote kans om al wildlife te spotten, zoals condors, caracara’s en wilde lama’s (vicuña’s).

Een van de hoogtepunten van de dag is de wandeling rond het Mica-meer. Deze zogeheten Mica Loop is een rustige wandeling van ongeveer 6,3 kilometer, waarbij je over goed begaanbare paden langs het meer loopt, met uitzicht op de imposante Antisana vulkaan (5.704 m) bij helder weer. De wandeling voert je door het unieke ecosysteem van de Andes-páramo, waar je bijzondere planten en vogelsoorten kunt tegenkomen.

Na de wandeling is er tijd voor een lichte lunch of snack (lunch is optioneel en op eigen kosten), waarna we rustig terugrijden naar Quito. We keren in de middag terug, met frisse lucht in onze longen en prachtige natuurbeelden in ons hoofd.
